WDIY New Music Spotlight: Chuck Prophet - 'The Land That Time Forgot'

Yep Roc Records
'The Land That Time Forgot' was released on May 15 via Yep Roc Records.

Chuck Prophet, the San Francisco-based psychedelic roots rocker is back with a new album entitled The Land That Time Forgot (2020-Yep Roc Records).
Working with his longtime collaborator klipschutz, his band The Mission Express and keyboardist/partner Stephanie Finch, the project draws on a vision of the Bay Area in all its glory and its changing aspects which include 'robots with ironic haircuts', Johhny Thunders, Willy Wonka and John The Baptist and all manner of strange scenarios; a darker take on what's happening all around us these days.

After starting to record, the band hit some trouble so Prophet took to touring solo and ending up in the Catskills of Northern New York state. There, he resumed tracking on the New York/Vermont border to get  some distance with new musicians for a fresh take, most of which was recorded live as participants kept coming and going like jumping off and on a carousel.

The single "Marathon" features Stephanie's harmonies and channels the great dance marathons of the great depression. "There's a twisted psychology to the Depression-era dance marathons," says Prophet.  "And like Wrestling or the Kardashians it's all rigged. But we don't want to believe it.  The marathons blurred the line between theatre and reality."

Taking the listener on a melancholy trip that makes rock and roll so timeless, a present take on Americana and it's beautiful losers, Chuck Prophet continues on a string of great records containing his offbeat and infectious rock and--sometimes zany--roll.  A welcomed voice in these indeed troubled times.
