Bethlehem's Rusting History with Steven and John Landis | Perspectives

John Pearce welcomes Steven and John Landis, and son and father duo who published the book Bethlehem Steel: Rusting Relic. They share how the process of creating the book began and its inclusion of photos Steven took during an exclusive walk through the plant in the early 2000s.

John dives into some of the history of Bethlehem Steel, from its origins in Moravian time to its impact on the nation to its eventual downfall and bankruptcy. Steven discusses his experience seeing the inside of the plant and at the top of the blast furnaces.

Tune in to Perspectives to hear about local history and the humanities, residents' stories, and organizations doing good in their neighborhoods. New episodes air the fourth Thursday of every month from 6:00 to 6:30 PM following All Things Considered.

(Original air-date: 5/22/25)

From the age of 9, John had his sights set on a career in broadcasting. But instead, he wound up teaching French and Spanish at Muhlenberg College for 40 years. Now, in retirement, John gets to call the mic and earphones his buddies at our studios in eclectic South Bethlehem. His signoff: "Remember to be gentle with your neighbor."
