Here’s the new connection to Ballas Wildflowers! A short walk on the old Slate Belt Trolley’s route brings us to a wide level trail over 3 bridges through woods. This leads to the 1-mile trail around the unshaded 35-acre wildflower meadow that’s nestled in the 90-acre Ballas Wildflower Preserve. Milton Ballas, a wholesale florist in northern New Jersey, bought the plot in the 1970s. Here, Mr. Ballas planted dogwood, forsythia, and other plants to sell in NYC. Mr. Ballas installed a pond for fishing as well. Bushkill Township bought the land in 2012 and planted this amazing display of wildflowers. After we circle the wildflowers, we’ll return through the woods to Sobers Run (an exceptional value stream) and Bushkill Township’s crushed stone trail.

This 2.5-mile hike is appropriate for all ages. The first and last sections are on a cinder path. The wildflower trail is wide, mowed meadow grass, with some variation in grade. Wear a sunhat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable shoes. Dogs must be kept on a 6-foot leash. Dog owners must dispose of all pet waste off the property. Mid-way, a portable bathroom is available at the Ballas parking lot.

DIRECTIONS: From PA Route 22 go to Route 33 North. Travel about 11 miles on Rt 33 to the PA-512 Exit. Take the PA-512 Exit toward Bath/Wind Gap. Turn west onto PA Route 512 South (toward Bath) and go 1 mile. Watch for the sign “Bushkill Township Trail” on your left. Turn left into the parking lot.
