Susan Klein: On the Wing

The Thanksgiving feast has been endowed with rigid traditions more than any other holiday meal. For Christmas you might have a ham or you might have goose. But for Thanksgiving only the turkey will do.

Another must around the Thanksgiving dinner are the family stories. Stories are a natural part of the giving of thanks. Much of Susan Klein’s storytelling comes out of her family stories and about growing up on Martha’s Vineyard during the 1950’s.

Susan has contributed much to the art of storytelling; not only through her own art of storytelling, but as a story coach, a director of story festivals, a conductor of workshops an organizer of retreats, and a writer of books.

I want to share with you a piece of a larger work called On the Wing. It’s from an earlier work called Through a Ruby Window. How early a work? Well I took this off a cassette tape. Look into the deep recesses of your own storage. You’ll probably still have a few cassette tapes, but with nothing to play them on.

This piece, by Susan Klein, doesn’t have to do with Turkeys. But, rather with a similar culinary experience. We pick up the story where Susan, her kindred spirit David, and his dog Rusty are about to play a game of Jack Knife.

Here is Susan Klein.

That was Susan Klein.

The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild holds its Storytelling Circle at Godfrey Daniels at 7 East 4th Street in Bethlehem on the second Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 pm (except the month of August). Come and listen to stories or try out a story yourself. We are a friendly audience and the event is free.

Well, that’s all for now, have fun and keep a story in your heart.
