A group of kids from the Southwest Philadelphia Healthnastics program, ages 3-18, held signs at a protest demanding the Kenney administration do more to address gun violence in the city on August 4, 2021.

Philadelphia schools will begin classes Tuesday, August 31st. Students are returning during a year in which shootings have spiked, many involving children. To date, more than 100 non-fatal shootings involved people under the age of 18.

As a result, the city has a plan it hopes will keep kids safe. WHYY’s Ximena Conde reports.
