Renell Powell is an assistant block captain for Playstreets. She started working with Playstreets in 2020 and is looking forward to giving out lunches, playing games, and doing arts and crafts this summer.

For the last 60 years Philadelphia has run its PlayStreets program, which functions both as a city-run summer camp and meal distribution program for families who rely on the city for meals.

A PlayStreet recently opened in Southwest Philadelphia July 15 at the same site where one year ago, a shooting broke out leaving one man dead. This all happened just a few feet from where kids were playing. WHYY’s Robby Brod has more on how the block has recovered, and how the city will keep the PlayStreets safe this year.
