Junior Brown
Junior Brown
With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked "Guit-Steel" guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He's the American Original.
Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown discovered his musical instincts early, especially after his family moved to rural Indiana, where Country music surrounded him “like it grew out of the ground.” After finding a guitar in his grandparents’ attic, he spent years woodshedding with records and radio, while exposure to older college‑aged musicians broadened his influences as the family moved from campus to campus. He began performing young—at parties, school events, even for five thousand Boy Scouts at Andrews Air Force Base—and as a teenager sat in with Bo Diddley, experiences that helped him build a deep foundation of musical chops.
Though he kept his love of Country music secret for years, by the late 1960s he embraced it fully, spending nights in small clubs across the Southwest and later surviving the competitive 1970s California honky‑tonk circuit, where he refined his professionalism and stage presence. Over time he expanded into Rock and Roll, Blues, Hawaiian, Bluegrass, and Western Swing, developing a writing style marked by consistency, wit, and emotional range.
By the mid‑1980s, as his songwriting matured, he dreamed up the “Guit‑Steel”—a double‑necked hybrid guitar built by Michael Stevens that allowed him to switch seamlessly between standard and steel guitar mid‑song. His playing and writing became distinctly his own, blending humor, seriousness, and unmistakable originality. In the early 1990s he moved to Austin, where a weekly Continental Club residency led to a seven‑album deal with Curb Records, Grammy nominations, a CMA award, and appearances on major TV shows, films, and ad campaigns. Collaborations with Ralph Stanley, Hank Thompson, the Beach Boys, George Jones, Ray Price, and others followed, further cementing his reputation.
Now completing his album The American Original, Junior continues touring. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT 'cause he's THE AMERICAN ORIGINAL!
