Charles Kiernan: Alma and the Graveyard

For storytellers, Halloween is special. It is the time of year that people expect to hear a story or two, all be it frightening. Too be honest, not all storytellers like to tell Halloween stories, given that so many of this ilk are formulaic. The “gotcha” at the end type can get a little tiring.

I have made a point of finding stories with Halloween elements in them, let’s say—oh—a graveyard, but have something more to them than trying to scare the listener. This Appalachian style tale is one of them. It is one of my “Lost Dollar” stories that I call Alma and the Graveyard.

To hear more Halloween stories, mark your calendar for Halloween night at Godfrey Daniels, Friday, October 31st. at 7:00pm. Children five and under free. Minions of the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild will regale you with fine Halloween fare.

From ghosts and ghouls and long legged beast and things that go bump in the night, good lord deliver us. Until then, have fun and keep a story in your heart.
