Forty thousand babies are born with congenital heart defects each year in the United States, according to the CDC, and they will undergo open-heart surgeries over their lifetime.

But a technology recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration may help minimize the number of those procedures. For WHYY, Ali McPherson has more.
