Philadelphia Seeks to Become Centerpiece of the National Juneteenth Celebration

Organizers of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival join city officials outside City Hall for the raising of the Black Liberation flag.

The U.S. Senate recently approved a bill to make Juneteenth an official federal holiday, recognizing the date in 1865 when enslaved Black Americans were finally told they were freed.

WHYY’s Peter Crimmins reports parade organizers in Philadelphia would like to see this city become the centerpiece of that national holiday.
