Cardiologists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University have been approved for a $35,000 funding award to provides mentorship and research training to medical trainees from under-represented groups.

Fewer than three percent of cardiologists were African American as of 2015, and research shows underlying health conditions - like heart disease - among Black Americans have been linked to higher rates of COVID-19 infections and deaths when compared to white Americans.

Some Temple University cardiologists have received a grant they hope will help diversify the medical workforce. WHYY's Sojourner Ahebee has more.
