Freelance artists working in new, creative, experimental, or improvised music who have had their income impacted by COVID-19 cancelations have some relief available thanks to the New Music Solidarity Fund.
A network of over 100 arts supporters including musicians Marcos Balter, Julia Bullock, Claire Chase, and Du Yun have established the New Music Solidarity Fund to provide emergency funding to musicians impacted by the pandemic. Beginning March 31 at 12 p.m. (Eastern), musicians can apply for a $500 emergency grant at the New Music Solidarity website as long as they answer yes to the following three questions:
- Are you a musician working in new, creative, experimental or improvised music and are you a freelance artist, i.e., non-salaried by an institution?
- Have you had a COVID-19 related cancelation of project(s)/performance(s) involving music by a living composer?
- Is your immediate livelihood threatened by these cancelations?
Funds will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Currently, the fund has two hundred sixty $500 grants available to distribute. The New Music Solidarity Fund has said they plan to fundraise through April 30 to support as many musicians as possible. You can donate to the fund at the New Music Solidarity website.
