  On the Cinematic Front    

The 19th Street Theatre presents The Last Stationn. Directed by Michael Hoffman, Screenwriter by Michael Hoffman and Starring Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, Paul Giamatti, Christopher Plummer.  Fact and fiction converge in this talent-driven drama based on Jay Parini's novel about Leo Tolstoy. The Last Station focuses on the marriage between Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) and his wife Sofya (Helen Mirren) in its final years. James McAvoy stars as a young man who works for the couple, while Paul Giamatti plays an advisor to the writer who fights his wife over financial issues.  No rating, 112 minutes

  Classical Calendar    

March 19th - Music at Wesley Concert Series presents the Linaria Ensemble in concert on Friday, at 7:30 p.m. at Wesley Church (2540 Center St. Bethlehem).  The ensemble features three outstanding local musicians who play with a distinct sheen and polish and put together highly imaginative programs.  The group includes Robin Kani, flute; Adriana Linares, viola and Frances Duffy, harp  playing works by Koechlin, Vellones, Grandjany, Rohozinsky and Ravel. This concert will be the group's second appearance on Music at Wesley's Concert Series. Admission is by donation at the door. 

March 20th - Moravian College presents a Student Recital featuring Junior music performance majors, Jeffrey Bell, tenor, and Albert Lazaro, guitar.  These students come together to present an eclectic evening of music from classical to jazz, from ancient to modern. Bronwyn Fix-Keller will accompany Mr. Bell; Mr. Lazaro will be joined by fellow students Alex Luquet on bass & Aaron Hetrick on drums.  Foy Concert Hall; Hurd Campus, Saturday at 7:30 PM

March 21st – The Bach Choir Of Bethlehem presents Bach, Brass & Beyond: A Choral Celebration.  Come and enjoy The Bach Choir perform spectacular repertoire which includes music by Bach, Barber, Dupre, Gabrieli, Hindemith, Schutz and Scheidt.  The concert will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem, PA.  The concert begins at 4:00 PM.  There will be a pre-concert lecture by Greg Funfgeld at 3:00 PM

March 26th - The Allentown Symphony's Chamber Music Cabaret Series resents the Luken's Piano Trio.  The concert takes place in the Rodale Community Room Friday at 7:30 PM

March 27 - The Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra will present a concert at Allentown Symphny Hall at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature a NEW PREMIERE written especially for this performance by local composer and musician, Mike Krisukas of Zen For Primates. The piece is titled Lazy Dogma- A Piece for Trombone, Orchestra and Subconscious Protagonist. It will feature Zen For Primates musicians, trombone soloist Rick Chamberlain and the PA Sinfonia Orchestra. Other works on the program are familiar favorites: Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and Mozart's Symphony 35 in D, k.385, Haffner;. March 28th - Moravian College presents the Collegium Musicum, Mostly Monteverdi Ensemble, & Baroque Ensemble under the direction of Early Music specialist, Dr. Larry Lipkis, offering music that was written before there was moveable type (let alone iPods!) Moravian College students both past and present are joined by other accomplished players to present a relaxing afternoon in the beauty of the stained glass Peter Hall. Sunday at 4:00 PM

March 31th - The Williams Center for the Arts presents the Brentano String Quartet - Critics and audiences alike are enthralled by the Brentano String Quartet. Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding; raves the London Independent, while The New York Times extols its luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism. Since winning the prestigious Naumburg Prize and the inaugural Cleveland Quartet Award in the mid-1990s, the Brentano has been a fixture at cultural centers throughout the world. The concert starts at 8:00 PM.

April 9th - Award-winning saxophonist, David Liebman, joins the Lehigh Valley Jazz Repertory and Lehigh students to play works by Shorter, Pastorius and Zawinul. The concert will be held on Friday, April 9th at Lehigh University's Baker Hall at 8:00 PM. For more information: 610-758-2787.

April 9th - The Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem is pleased to present the prize winning Jupiter String Quartet. Founded in 2001, they tour internationally and are active in musical outreach. With them will be young pianist, Ben Kim. They will be bringing us a program of Haydn, Bartók, and Schumann. The Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem has been bringing world class ensembles to the Lehigh Valley since 1951. Sign up for email announcements of upcoming events and last minute changes. April 10th & 11th - Diane Wittry leads The Allentown Symphony with guest performer, Laurence Kaptain playing the Cimbalom in Gypsy Rhythms. Music is an integral part of every culture in the world. Especially exciting are gypsy rhythms and melodies of Hungary and Eastern Europe. Bartok, Enesco, Kodaly, Stravinsky, and Liszt, all used folk music as the focal point for the pieces featured in this concert. Melodies are woven into the fabric of the music and create the toe-tapping excitement of a folk performance. This is a concert you won't want to miss! April 10th at 8:00 PM & April 11th at 3:00 PM

April 17th - Chanticleer will appear in concert at Zoellner Arts Center's Baker HallChanticleer is comprised of 12 voices of the "world's reigning male chorus. Chanticleer was named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America and has performed at more than 100 concerts in 2008-09, Chanticleer will premieres a piece written by Steven Sametz, commissioned by the LU Choral Arts to commemorate its 25th season. May 1st -The Bach and Handel Chorale of Jim Thorpe will present their Bach & Handel Chorale Spring Concert at historic St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Saturday at 3:00 pm under the direction of Randall D. Perry, Artistic Director.  This year's Spring Concert will feature many great choruses sung by the Chorale. Part I will include: Surely, He Hath Borne Our Griefs, And With His Stripes We Are Healed and All We Like Sheep from Handel's Messiah as well as Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened from Handel's Coronation Anthem No. 4. Part II will include: Bach's Dona Nobis Pacem and other familiar choruses from Bach Cantatas. Maestro Perry will perform Gigue (from Harpsichord Concerto in G) by Handel. May 3rd - Williams Center The Performing Arts presents young Japanese-American sensation Ryu Goto joins The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra to perform Max Bruch's soulful and expressive Violin Concerto, a masterpiece of the German Romantic period. Hear and see why all of Japan is enthralled with the musical charm of this 21-year-old. Bruch's Romantic fire combines with the classical brilliance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, with the orchestra at full throttle, and Igor Stravinsky's whimsical and inventive Octet, featuring the splendid ensemble of Orpheus's winds and brass. The Lehigh Saengerbun Chorus rehearses at Egner Chapel, Muhlenberg College on Tuesday evenings starting at 7:30pm.  Because of our success and recent increases in audience attendance, we are expanding the size of our chorus.  We welcome new members in the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass sections. April 9th - Kutztown Folk Music Society presents Daybreak, Daybreak applies their  rich blend of acoustic instruments and voices to Celtic jigs, reels, hornpipes and ballads; American folk tunes and songs, folk hymns, original pieces, and seasonal songs. Their uniquely-woven sounds, as well as innovative arrangements, bring warmth and freshness to an uncommon range of traditional and current genres.  The Kutztown Folk Music Society Season Concerts are held at: St. Johns UCC in Kutztown, PA in the main sanctuary. June 23rd - 27th - The 20th Annual Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering takes place at Little Buffalo Family Campground Newport, PA. Bucks County Folk Song Society holds its regular monthly meetings at Wrightstown Friends Meetinghouse, Rte 413 (Durham Rd.)
Wrightstown, PA. Meetings are normally held on the first Sunday of every month, but occasionally switch to the second Sunday when the first is on a holiday weekend. About 1-1/2 Hours for Munching, Jamming, and Schmoozing. The festivities begin around 6:30 and end promptly at 10:00pm.

City of Bethlehem Bagpipe Band. The Bethlehem Bagpipe Band is a street band that is located in Bethlehem, Pa. Currently, we have over 25 playing and several non-playing members, that range in age from 12 to 50+. We are always seeking out new members.   Youth Media Calendar    

March 20th - Students and Professors from local Colleges are celebrating Brain Awareness Week with on open house on Saturday, March 20th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Main Library of the Bethlehem Area Public Library, at 11 West Church Street. March 20th -The final Iron Pigs Pig Tales in the Barnyard event will take place on Saturday, March 20th at 10am. Pig Tales in the Barnyard is a free hour-long storytelling event featuring Farmer Sally that has been a staple of the Iron Pigs off-season activities at Coca Cola Park this winter.  In this edition, Farmer Sally will be joined by IronPigs mascot Ferrous.  For more information, 610-841-PIGS.

March 21st - The Kutztown University Theater Department presents Junie B. March 21st - The children's Storytelling Series will end with a performance by Kathy Long.  People of all ages-from nursery schools to nursing homes- make up Kathy's audiences.  She believes people can learn through storytelling, and that as we advance technologically, we must not forget oral tradition.  There is a small fee for children over 5 years of age.  For more information on the performance, see Lehigh valley Storytelling Guild. March 27th - Magic Mike will be mystifying audiences at the Nazareth Center for the Arts, Magic Mike has performed all over the world. His start in the business came in college, Mike became the most requested waiter at the Olive Garden in Easton when he started doing magic at tables for kids. Eventually they took him off the floor and had him doing strolling magic permanently. It was then a Continental Airline recruiter saw him and for eight years he performed for the airline on planes. "The question I am asked most frequently is Does magic really exist? I can honestly reply... yes!" The show takes place on Saturday March 27th at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. March 27th - The Mock Turtle Marionettes continues their "Saturday's Child Family Series" on March 27th with "Da Pooch" at 10:00 AM at the Icehouse on Sand Island in Bethlehem.  The series concludes on April 10th with Tinker Tailor-Mock Turtle. March 28th - Children 10 years of age and younger are invited to Fountain Hill Borough's 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt.  The hunt is open to children residing in the Borough of Fountain Hill and will be held on Sunday March 28th beginning at 12 noon at Fountain Hill Park located on the 1300 Block of Stanley Avenue. A pre-registration admission pass is required for each child.  Admission passes are available until March 19th at the Borough Administrative office located at 941 Long Street from 9 AM- 4 PM Monday-Friday.  Proof of residency in the Borough is required for passes. The Easter bunny will also be arriving during the day.

March 1st - April 15th - The Allentown Music Club is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior in Northampton or Lehigh county.  The award will be given to a senior who has been accepted into an accredited music school for the performing arts.  Applications will be accepted for those who are majoring in music performance and planning to attend college in the fall.  The application deadline is April 15th.  For information: Jane Gambone at 610-435-0120.  
 
March 3rd thru March 31st -The South Side Branch of the Bethlehem Area Public Library is holding a five-week Family Place workshop for parents and their toddlers ages one to three.  The Toddlers at Play program connects parents to human resources throughout the community and allows parents to speak with specialists and share parenting tips with others.  This program runs on consecutive Wednesdays starting March 3rd through March 31 from 11 AM to 12:15 PM, at 400 Webster Street. March thru May 23rd -The Crayola Factory, 30 Center Square, Easton, presents a dinosaur exhibit which runs through May 23rd.  The exhibit features a 9-foot-tall brontosaurus, an 11 1/2 foot long stegosaurus, and a 6 by 11 foot tyrannosaurus rex, all made of PVC pipe, chicken wire, staples, paper mache, and paint.  There is a fee.  For more information, 610-515-8000 or vist their website.
 
The 2010 FREDDY© Awards For High School Performances is shaping up to be a great one this year. The FREDDY© Awards program is designed to recognize and reward exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theatre in local high schools. The 3-hour LIVE broadcast includes a stellar opening number, performances by nominated musicals, actors and actresses, and presentation of the 2009 FREDDY© Awards in 21 award categories.

The State Theatre's FREDDY© Awards is the only high school musical awards program in the nation that produces a live television show. The telecast has received numerous broadcast awards, including a 2005 Mid-Atlantic EMMY® for Outstanding Performing Arts Program. The award ceremony takes place on Thursday, May 27, 2010 - 7 pm at the State Theatre Center For The Arts.  Watch it live on WFMZ Channel 69 or stream from their website.. March 13th thru June 12th -- KidTunes, hosted by ArtsQuest, features the following childrens performers: at the Banana Factory, Bethlehem.  KidTunes is a music series designed to introduce children to diverse musical genres like rock, jazz, world, and folk.  The line up includes:

  • April 10th - Classic rockers StarFish - Get ready to rock! StarFish comes to the KidTunes Series with their unique brand of cool, classic rock-style music for kids.
  • May 9th - Former Meat loaf guitarist mr:Ray - Music for the kid in all of us! mr. Ray (Ray Andersen) entertains with mostly original pop/rock songs about friendly aliens, dinosaurs, zebras, imagination and other groovy kid stuff.
  • June 10th - Rockers Dogs On Fleas - Dog on Fleas has been recording and performing music for young children for 10 years..

April 9th - Kutztown University is offering free reading assesments for children in 1st through 9th grades who may be having difficulty reading.  Testing will be availble from 9 a.m. to noon on April 9th.  Parents will recieve a case report and a written summary with recommendations. April 15th -
The Allentown Music Cluib is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior in Northampton or Lehigh county.  The award will be given to a senior who has been accepted into an accredited music school for the performing arts.  Applications will be accepted for those who are majoring in music performance and planning to attend college in the fall.  The application deadline is April 15th.  For information: please call Jane Gambone at 610-435-0120 or visit their website.

April 16th & 17th - Charitable organization's Angel 34, Camelot for Children, and Dream Come True are joining together with Nazareth, Easton, Dieruff, and William Allen High Schools to hold Hope-a-Thon, a 24 hour event to raise money to benefit childhood cancer.  This event, filled with dancing, music, and fun will take place on April 16th to 17th from 7pm to 7pm at the Charles Chrin Community Center. March 19th - The Art of Giving silent auction featuring original artwork and eclectic gift baskets will be held from 6-8 PM at the Baum School of Art located at 510 Linden Street in Allentown.  All proceeds benefit the soup kitchen of the Lehigh County Conference of Churches.  For ticket information the number is (610) 435-5054. 

March 20th - Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley is holding their 8K run 5 K run, and ½ mile fun run at the Ironton Rail Trail in Whitehall.  Proceeds from the event will send 2 families to Camp Sunshine, which supports children with life threatening illnesses and their families.  Registration will be held from 8-9:30 AM with the events beginning at 10 AM.    For more information or to register for the event check out their website.

On Going Events

The DaVinci Science Center in Allentown is seeking volunteers to serve as exhibit educators to assist visitors with more than 200 hands-on exhibits. Volunteers should be effective communicators and enjoy working with people. The center is open 7 days a week. Training is held on site and all participants are required to have background clearances. Jazz in the Valley is asking all artists to submit poster designs for the 1st Annual Jazz in the Valle Festival. The requirements for the poster are it needs to be vertical, the size of the artwork must be 24x18, and the artwork can be in any media. The deadline for all entries is March 30th 2010. The Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink located on Illick's Mill Road is open for ice skating Sunday-Thursday from 1-5 pm and Friday and Saturday from 1-5 and 7-10 pm. Season passes are also available.

Rainbow Ridge Farm Equestrian Center would like to invite you for Family Fun Day every Sunday from 1-4 pm. Come and enjoy crafts, facepainting, help to feed the animals and more. Community Services is a non-profit in Kutztown, PA that serves families and individuals living in poverty with case management, a food pantry, cash assistance, parenting classes, unemployment services and more.
