Program Highlights - Week of June 29th
Edited by Geoff Chambers
FLASH: Be sure to tune in for Woodstock Wednesday, as we commemorate the anniversary of the Woodstock Arts & Crafts Festival held in the summer of 1969 in Bethel, New York. For details on our special programming, see below.
MONDAY, June 29
Valley Arts Salon, 6 to 6:30 pm: Host Mark McKenna talks with Melanie Gold from The Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group about the first-of-its-kind Lehigh Valley Literary Awards, scheduled in July to honor local writers. Also, Paul Willistein takes us to the movies with his regular weekly review, and Sharon McCarthy serves up another tasty edition of "Savorings."
Take Charge of Your Life, 6:30 to 7 pm: Host Eleanor Bobrow talks about healthy aging. Americans are living longer; our average life expectancy is 77 years for women and 73 years for men. Eleanor will talk with two local figures who have a unique perspective on the subject: Dr. Frances Salerno, MD, Associate Chief of Geriatrics at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, and Henry Acres, former vice president of Cedar Crest College and founder of the 700-member Institute for Learning in Retirement. Dr. Salerno and Mr. Acres co-authored the book Basic Prevention, A Guide to Healthy Aging, which details how to be "young old", enjoying life and reducing the time, if any, when you may be "frail old" and become dependant on others. Tune in for a guide on how to Take Charge of your body and health so that your future years may be brighter.
WEDNESDAY, July 1
Woodstock Wednesday: Join WDIY for a special day of programming. Woodstock Wednesday will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock through songs and stories, as we also run a one-day Membership Drive. Music from Woodstock's performers, memories from local people who attended the festival, and history highlights mark the day. Listen and reminisce - become a member or make an extra gift to the station.
THURSDAY, July 2
Lehigh Valley Discourse, 6 to 7 pm: Sharon McCarthy and Greg James interview Dr. Peter Langman, Allentown author of Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters.
Galactic Travels, 11 pm to 1 am: Bill Fox presents hour-long soundscapes of electronic, ambient, and space music. The Special Focus for July is Jeffrey Koepper, who has been creating emotional electronic music since 1985 and was formerly with the groups Pure Gamma and Immortal. The Featured CD at Midnight will be Koepper's Etherea, released on the Air Space Records label in 2003.
